Why it's time to end the wars
There are a number of great crimes that take place on our Earth every single day.
Our insistence on exploiting one another for personal gain, even when that exploitation causes great suffering and death: that is a crime.
The failure to take the necessary, concrete and reasonable actions necessary to avoid runaway climate change and possible human extinction: that is also a crime.
And the ease by which we permit our governments to kill other people through the mechanism of war: this is perhaps the most terrible crime of all.
As I get older, I realize how little I know in the grand scheme of things.
But the ability for human beings to resolve their disputes through dialogue, through peaceful means -- this is a self-evident, obvious proposition.
War happens because it makes men rich, incredibly rich. This ill-gotten wealth comes from arms sales, through selling propaganda, by investing in companies that supply the mercenaries and supplies for war, or through lucrative consulting contracts that specialize in advocating for war and imperialism abroad.
The single most important thing humanity could do as a species, to save itself, and to survive the climate crisis, would be to simply end the wars.
Honest, thoughtful dialogue, and a genuine commitment to human cooperation, would pave the way for the type of radical international politics we need to deal with a warming planet.
Bombing people's weddings is not a real answer, to any problem. And it is not the answer we need to survive the 21st century.
I would challenge any person who thinks that we cannot end the wars to consider the fact that in keeping the status quo, they are effectively condemning the species to extinction.
Like I said earlier, the older I get, the more I realize I don't know. But one thing I know to my very bones: there is no need for war. And anyone calling for more war is doing it to line their own pockets, and for no other reason. Those people must be condemned.
Hell is empty, and all the devils are here.
Are we really so blind to think that shooting each other -- or threatening to shoot each other -- is the way out of the disaster we have created for ourselves as a species?
The world is warming and we are all headed off a cliff. War is not the answer. Time to end the wars.
