Fighting for a Golden Age
These are the things I fight for:
I fight for democratic freedoms. A believe, deeply, that all people have inherent dignity and worth, and that every government must preserve and defend that dignity and worth.
All people deserve to live in societies that encourage the development of free human consciousness. This means preserving and protecting political and civil human rights; and it means preserving and protecting economic, social and cultural rights as well. Democracy means more than elections: it is a way of life built around the defense of human rights, the rule of law, and economic, political, social and cultural freedom.
I fight for peace. We are born into a world that is in constant war. Exploitation and greed are the defining characteristics of our globalized world.
To end war, we must defend the weak and rush to their defense. We must call for dialogue as a way to settle disputes. And we must cultivate the utmost courage in our hearts to face down and defeat those who use fear and terror as forms of control.
I fight for sustainability. The world is being used up. That’s the easiest way to put it. Ice caps are melting, sea levels are rising, temperatures are warming, life is going extinct; that is the harsh and cruel reality of the present. Major social changes will be needed to avert massive environmental disasters in the next 30 to 50 years.
We must change our ways, change our economies, change the ways we relate to each other and the Earth. I fight for those positive, important changes.
I fight for a Golden Age. I can imagine a world in which societies are built around democratic freedom, peace, and sustainability. That world looks very different than the world of today. Instead of bringing out the worst in people, that type of world would bring out the best in people.
A world in which we are all motivated and given the opportunity to express the best in ourselves -- that type of world can be built. It would be a true Golden Age for humanity. I fight for that Golden Age. Join me!
